Correspondence Course Home Study - Advice on home-study MT courses ?

Q. I am seeking information on the various home-study courses available. Has anyone here gone through one? Is it realistic to think that they would prepare me to work from home immediately? Your thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

A. I just finished a home-study course with At-Home Professions. I thought it was pretty good. I completed it in 8 months, working very part-time hours. It helped that I had a medical terminology background. So far, I have not found work. The school sends out alot of printed material to help you get started, but no real job placement...which is unfortunate. I also took a course through At-Home Professions about three years ago with the intentions of working out of my home. I had no previous knowledge of medical terminology before I took the course. I was very nervous about getting started. I finished the course in about six months. I transcribe out of my home for a podiatrist and two orthopaedists. I was also referred to one of the athletic training rooms for one of the universities in this area by the orthopaedists and will start transcribing for them next month. I started out very slowly and am still only transcribing part time. After taking the course and buying two medical dictionaries, a spell checker, two drug books, and a couple of orthopaedic books, I feel I did okay. I am glad I didn't start out full time, somehow I doubt I would have been able to do it. I have two small children (one is six months old and the other is three years old) and wanted something I could do to supplement our income while my husband is in school that would not require us to put our kids in daycare. I also have another part-time job outside my home and can take my children with me. I am glad I took the course. I really enjoy transcribing. There are a couple of other home-study correspondence courses that you might want to look into before you sign up and spend your money with AHP. For example, the excellent and well-respected SUM training program is offered by both Jennifer Martin and the CCHS. For more information, call Jennifer at (800) 951-5559. I've never taken any of the correspondence courses, but based on several years of hearing about all of them over on CIS, the AHP program doesn't fare very well in comparison to the SUM programs.
