Online or Distance Learning Tech Writing Courses ?Q. I am looking for online or distance learning technical writer courses. I'm not interested in getting a degree--just three or four accredited courses that cover the basics of tech writing. I don't have time to attend regular classes, so I'm looking for courses that are online/distance learning. Can anyone recommend any? I would like to take courses with a well-known or respected university, if possible. A. You could check this one out.. http://explore.berkeley.edu/UCExt/ Search for Technical Communication. This is an Advanced Technical Writing course (Technical Communication II - X466) with the University of California, Berkeley (Internet Program). When www.lifelonglearning.com updates its course lists, it will be a better resource for finding online and distance-learning opportunities, but for now you can go to http://www.ecollege.com/student/Search_search_course.html. Select “All Disciplines,” “All Institutions,” and “All Locations” for the appropriate drop-down menus. Type in a keyword for the courses that you seek and click “Go.” When I used “technical writing” for a keyword, I got a list including technical writing courses from the University of Wyoming, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Dallas. It appears as though eCollege only lists courses offered by its partners. I know that Utah State University,* Texas Tech University,** and Rensselear Polytechnic Institute*** all offer complete online degree programs in technical writing/communications. It is probably possible just to take the courses you want from any of these schools without applying for admission to a degree program. For more information about online and distance learning, go to www.degreeinfo.com Look into Mercer University School of Engineering. With their grad program in tech comm, you can earn a graduate certificate by taking two courses. It's a real brick-and-mortar school and fully accredited. http://www.mercer.edu/engineering/GRAD_PROGRAMS/tco.htm By the way, the Interactive Hypermedia course has been replaced with a very good course in Instructional Design.
