Free Ged ClassesQ. i'm going to be taking the GED test at the end of this month. I was reading a sentence today that someone posted in another group and I was confused. Here's the sentence: There (is, are) a lot of things about the game that scare me. Would the correct word to use in that sentence be "There is" or would it be correct with "There are"? My take on this is that the phrase *a lot of things* is the subject and the sentence should read There are a lot of things, not There is a lot of things. I tend to go by sound though in general. There are just sounds correct to me and I am *usually* right about it. A. I used to go by sound too, but that makes me ge the wrong answers. Look at this example: Each of the children (is, are) ready for school. In this sentence, the correct verb to use is "is" because the subject is "Each". "Each" is singular and the verb must agree with the subject. It definitely sounds as if the right answer is "are" when I say the sentence aloud; however, the book says otherwise. I took a pre-test at my local high school because my original plan was to attend one of the free GED classes there. The counselor told me that the results concluded that I was at the 12th grade level for all 5 tests except Reading Comprehension. If I were to guess why I had low scores in the Reading comprehension, i'd say that since it was so cold in that class room (i'm talking probably in the 60s in there), and since I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts, I just wasn't thinking clearly. Nervousness combined with freezing cold isn't a good combination. Right now i'm studying a GED book that I bought about 10 years ago. I got a very good Algebra book from the library called "Algebra Success in 20 Minutes a Day". The Algebra book is awesome. The GED book has a wealth of information too. Rght now, i'm up to the part where the GED book explains how to properly combine sentences using a semi colon ( ; ) and a "cojunctional adverb" (however, therefore, moreover, furthermore). I finished the Algebra book.
