Ged CollegeQ. I was just wondering, if you have a GED and you want to take Computer Engineering, do you have to go to go to a community college first before you can got to a real school? A. In the U.S., there aren't any rules. It varies by the college. If the college wants you, they'll take you regardless if you have a GED, a note saying you were home schooled, or nothing at all (as in the case of the twelve year old geniuses you occassionally read about who attend college). If there's a specific college you wish to attend, call them up, explain your situation and see what they tell you. But don't think a GED automatically excludes you from all colleges (the American college system is designed to offer an infinite number of second chances).
