Ged DiplomaQ. Three years ago my daughter quit high school after failing 11th grade. She now wishes to complete her education and continue on to the community college. Returning to the local high school is not an option for her. Although her goals are quite sketchy I think the choice she makes between the GED and the high school diploma programs is very important. The CC offers a program in which a GED is earned after x semester hours. The DL schools she is considering are Citizens High School http://www.citizenschool.com/10.html which has accreditation from the DETC and James Madison http://www.pcdi-homestudy.com/courses/jm/ which is part of the Professional Career Developement Institute. PCDI is accredited by the DETC and the high school page states it is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Both schools offer either General or Academic Diplomas. Would someone offer opinions as to the pros and cons of each choice? A. Regarding the GED: It's possible to obtain a GED diploma in most states simply by taking a single, relatively basic multiple-choice examination (which many 10th graders have been known to pass). If your daughter's objective is to acquire the equivalent of a high school diploma, she might try taking the test once. If she wants to take on a DL high school program to actually learn the material, though, then kudos to her! Regarding the options presented later in your post: all things being equal, go with the Southern Association accreditation over DETC. DETC accreditation is relatively new and not quite as solid.
