Ged In SpanishQ. What is the best way to learn Spanish? Obviously submerging oneself in a *spanish* environment would be ideal but how about a Canuk living in Canada? Is independent study okay?(ie. vocabulary, verbs) Or should I go full on with night courses? I have a full-time job/career. A. Are you really a Canuk living in Canada? Wow! It is getting cold where you live right now? I assume that you have a computer, why not trying a CD-ROM that teaches Spanish? I am trying to learn French with a set of four from a company called Pro-One, and I can always go back in my lessons. If you feel that it is possible to make time for night classes you might benefit from your teacher's help and you can also practice with other motivated students like you. I am a native spanish speaker, work full time at night, take care of my children and I also went back to college part time. My major is secondary education in Spanish. One time I met this gentleman from Canada, he speaks spanish so well that I always thought that he lived at one time in a spanish-speaking country. I was surprised to learn that until recently he lived all his life in Canada. What about spanish TV? Although radio is good you will be able to associate the spoken words with objects or situations better if you see what is going on. You will have a good time and learn a little about spanish cultures. Also the friends in this group will be more than happy to help you even if you live miles away. I hope this help and that you become succesful in your project. I'm not entirely sure at this point whether the chart I've mapped out is the most sound or not, but this is what I am doing so far, for whatever it's worth. Year 1 >>> Basics Year 2 >>> Read, read, read Year 3 is yet to be determined. End of year 5 >> hopefully fluent (at least understand and be understood in most normal converations - and be able to read "classic" novels with minimum look-ups. In Year 1, I used some basic CD rom tools (with fair to meddling manuals), as well as some basic Spanish Language books. The focus for this year is on pronunciation, genderizing nouns, conjugating verbs, etc, etc. I have used the Foreign Service Institue Service Tapes (focus is on pronunciation), Spanish in a Car, Spanish Now! books from Barrons, etc, etc. In Year 2, I am trying to: read a Spanish newspaper as much as I can everyday. Get down cold Spanish Bilingual Dictionary (Barrons) 1300 entries Get down cold 750 Verbs and Their Uses (Wiley) 750 Verbs used in 5 or more sentences each, contrasting different meanings of the verb. Get down cold Mastering Spanish Vocabulary > a Thematic Approach (Barrons) 5,245 entries. Then, I am reading two books. English and Spanish versions side by side. After each chapter, try to read the chapter on another day and see how many fewer words I have to look up. The particular books I've chosen are both in paperback and the Spanish and English versions are both under $15 each. They are: 1) The Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez 2) Harry Potter and the Socerers Stone, J. K. Rowling Many others are available. I noticed the other day that most of Stephen King's books are in Spanish. I'd imagine just about any Top 10 New York Times book can be found in paperbook in Spanish. I haven't started it yet, but I also have a GED book in Spanish, which I'll be reading when I've finished one of the above.
