Have you done Skip Barber's Hi Performance Driving school?Q. Now, that the divorce is done I can finally do anything I want! One item close to the top of that list (behind subscribing to some, new reading material) is to learn some new driving skills. Skip Barber's Hi Performance Driving school came immediately to mind but I thought I would run it past this group before I sign up.Anyone here done this? Where did you go? How was the experience? A. I've never taken a Skippy School. But here are some facts: In terms of cost, a 2-day Barber school is about 4-5 times the cost of a 2-day 'CCA school. Ours are about $300-$350. I understand you CAN work (corners, etc.) for credit toward your Barber school fees, so your cash outlay might be similar, but you'll have some serious time tied up in it. For the 2 day weekend schools, I understand a 'CCA school offers more 'seat time' on track. At many (Badger Bimmers' Road America schools included), you also get off-track driving exercises to work on your braking and cornering skills in an even safer environment. I'm guessing you have more classroom time with Barber, although I believe all 'CCA schools offer at least some classroom instruction. The Barber instructors are paid professionals while most (not all!) 'CCA instructors are volunteers or even paying for the privilege to ride (and maybe get sick - and sometimes crash) with you. Many of both groups are, or were, race drivers and nearly all have at least some autocross competition experience. The 'CCA group isn't too isolated, incorporating a lot of crossover with Quattro Club, Porsche Club, and other similar clubs' instructors. We all know pretty much the same things about driving. Our execution varies. Some great competition drivers are lousy instructors while some great instructors will never be decent competition drivers. For the money, certainly for your first or second school, I firmly believe BMW CCA offers the most bang for your buck. You can always go, as many have, to Barber school AFTER you've done ours. Whatever you decide, it WILL be the most fun you've ever had in your car - with all your clothes on.
