How long can I drive using my full US license before I have to apply for an Irish provisional & take the Irish test?

Q. How long can I drive using my full US license before I have to apply for an Irish provisional & take the Irish test?

A. I'm not sure what the time limit is (or even if there is one). I know that if you are resident here, you have to have an Irish license. Since getting a provisional license doesn't involve surrendering your Canadian (or whatever) license, you should get one as soon as you get here. Technically, this allows you to drive but only accompanied by a fully-licensed driver. Practically, though, this law is not enforced. On your second provisional license (which replaces the first after 2 years) you can drive by yourself provided you have "L" plates on your car. Insurance will be expensive and hard to get on a provisional license. You can hire cars using your foreign license, but it seems risky to me since insurance companies don't exactly like paying claims and would have a good reason not to pay yours if you were not complying with the laws regarding licenses and residency. Basically, if you plan on staying here any significant length of time, you are going to have to bite the bullet and sit the Irish driving test. And that test is, frankly, the most arbitrary and opaque test I've ever had to take: obscure in its content and capricious in its assessment.
