Literacy Ged

Q. Does anyone have an after school program in Grades 1-4 operated by the school staff? We need info to begin tutoring/enrichment activities one day a wk after school for 2 hours. We need ideas for implementation for kid garden school. Any suggestions???

A. An example: Hawthorne's After School Technology Program for All Community Learners Several middle and high school students have frequently used the school's computers to access electronic resources and tools (word processors, CD ROM, educational software, and the WWW) to complete homework assignments and projects. Internet access and instruction have attracted many adults and students. Participants have used e-mail to send messages to elected officials, friends, and others. Internet activities have also included exploration of the World Wide Web and gopher. For Hawthorne students the program has extended educational services and learning beyond the school day. Elementary students are engaged in learning activities with educational (mathematics, language and cognitive development, and reference) software. Often these students have been joined by siblings from other schools, parents, and other family members. Students sometimes work together with family members or peers. In the eyes of the children, parents and other adults working in front of a computer are often seen as learners and role models. Adults and parents often work with children or work on other activities including electronic tutorials (for Microsoft Office, adult literacy, GED preparation, and job skills) and creating documents (i.e., resumes and work related projects). A Thought On the evenings when (free) Internet instruction is offered to the community in Hawthorne's computer lab, over half of the adults that fill the lab are without children enrolled in the public schools. During these sessions the adults are seeking services and information from their public school district. By providing community residents with a service and information they value, the school becomes a valued community resource. Of those participating in this activity, how many of them will have a more positive perception of their public schools and therefore be willing to support school bonds and levies?
