Massachusetts Ged

Q. I am proposing a newsgroup dedicated to the discussion of GED (High School Equivalency Diploma test) issues to be used by both students and instructors and other interested parties. The GED is an important alternative educational path for those people who are not able to follow the conventional path. There are, however, many issues and concerns about this program and a forum such as this will facilitate communication. Teachers will have the opportunity to share ideas, lessons, and experiences with fellow practitioners. Teachers all over the country are producing educational materials that they can share with their colleagues. Prospective candidates for the test can ask for information. Many other people in the community who have heard about the test will have the chance to learn more about it and express opinions. Last week, I sent a query to the misc.education.adult group about the availability of a forum to discuss these issues. I received many responses from people in the United States and Canada showing interest in participating in such a forum. I am very interested in reading your comments about this proposal as well as anyone have thought on "Why is misc.education.adult not adequate for my purposes. Is it overflowing with discussion about GEDs ????"

A. Some of my thoughts follow: GED is not restricted just to adults. Some states such as Massachusetts, where I teach, allow children as young as 16 take the test. Their problems and concerns are much different than those of adults. Teachers of this group are concerned with issues such as job to work and motivation. Teachers of older students have different motivational issues. They also have to be concerned about different types of personal issues that may both advance or impede education. You are right about misc.education.adult not overflowing with discussions of GED issues, and that there are other newsgroups that are appropriate vehicles for discussing GED issues, not only the adult newsgroup, but also some of the k-12 newsgroups. The problem is that there is no focal point. I do not say that GED professionals should not use the other newsletters, what I do say is that a GED newsletter can be a starting point, as I said in my original proposal, a place to share information. If a participant sees an appropriate article in another newsgroup, he can refer the group to it. Another reason for a lack of GED discussions at the present time is that GED teachers as a group are just beginning to get on the net. Many are still afraid of getting their feet wet. Most of their worksites do not have computers or are just beginning to have them.. Furthermore many GED teachers tend to be isolated and need the support of their fellow practitioners. Considering the subject matter of some of the groups that are found in usenet, I believe this group will be an example of what should be done in the future world of cyberspace.
