Military Leadership Skills ?Q. Military Leadership Skills ? A privatized miloitary would be able to avoid governmental waste and garbage, but it could also run into regulatory problems like cutting corners, and then there's that problem about privatizing the secured intelligence area. Comparing it with schools, though, .... whew! ... hmmmm, ...... It seems that the schools could operate on a more localized level, being able to respond to the needs of the patronage more easily than the public goods sector. Economically, we're dealing the difference between services which everyone uses (the military) and the services which only certain individuals use at any given moment (the schools). They don't play under the same rules in most cases. How this translates into the privatization argument, ... hmmm, .... Not all public goods are government-run institutions, some are given monopoly status to private firms, and others are run by the govt. We're worried about a military with an outside agenda? What about schools with an outside agenda? No serious person would suggest that running the schools and running the defense of the nation are comparable in any meaningful way. I'm serious, and I think that the poster has a good question going. Whether we should act on his suggestion is another matter entirely. Rather than stonewall, why not address the question maturely, okay? In terms of outside agendas, both already have them. Schools would be more susceptible to competetive agendas, though, and this brings some protection from whatever agenda they concoct. It's unlikely that Sam's Defensive Services and the Shoot-it Infantry, Inc will really be significant at the same time. Should Sam decide to sell out to foreign investors, therefore, we might be vulnerable to outside threats. Of course, if schools decide to conduct themselves porrly, ... you have a very good point, .... is this merely a matter of pre-set biases? I'm not even sure. I'll get back to this after I've had some time to think about it and do some charts, graphs, etc, ... okay? A. - I'm not sure whose freedom is being limited when we have a peacetime all-volunteer force. Care to enlighten me? Your last point is valid circa the Eighteenth Century. Today, especially, our only defense is what is available right now. Inactive reserves and mothballed equipment is useless unless the crisis lasts beyond a factor of months. (Maybe I should have said moral obligations?) - Ever hear of North Korea? How about Iran? Iraq? Libya? And things are restless in the former Soviet Union. While the day may come (and we all hope it does) when reason will prevail, we are a long way off. You really think a "trade agreement" is going to prevent aggression if some fool decides to get aggressive? - The equation MUST include cost-effectiveness. And on what do you base that statement? Just how "efficient" would solar-powered trains be? I can just see it, 125 car freights with solar panels on all the freight cars. Of course, there'd be no "midnight express" then, would there? Tip toe, through the tulips ... What drivel. Let's see now, a water powered freight - that's an interesting one to contemplate. Ok, how about a wind powered freight. , I can see the big sails (opps, watch out for that highway overpass).
