Re Motivational / Success techniques, seminars, etc.?Q. Re Motivational / Success techniques, seminars, etc.? Can't seem to get to original messages through my AOL reader, and system dropped me last night when I tried responding (twice). But anyway. I regard the baby bells as legitimate telecommunications companies. Due to divestiture and the need to survive and manage 'change' they have given considerable thought and resources to motivational issues. At P*cific B*ll we have been through at least three company-wide waves of motivational training since 1982. First there was New Age Thinking. Then there was Krone's Leadership Development (that got us into the newspapers) and more recently Winning Spirit. I guess I would have to regard the company I work for as "sales" oriented, since like most companies they have a product to sell and the success they have selling it, and their success managing the infrastructure to sell it determines whether or not they will survive. Actually in a sense you have to say we haven't survived. Arrangements were made to have us eaten up by another baby bell as opposed to being vulnerable to a long distance carrier, or international company on the assumption that we would be more alike than different, having both been part of the Bell System previously. A. - Let's get back to basic premis of this thread - that motivational training is somehow restricted to MLMers. At least that is how I interpreted it. I am saying it isn't so. I know that there are companies that provide motivational training to their workers that are not MLMers. For some companies this will be their sales force, for others it will be middle and upper level management, for others it will be the entire company (if they can get it by the unions.). I apologize if I implied something too broad and you feel it is bullshit. Regardless of how I perceive MLMers, I think it is important to point out that the motivational / success techniques preceded their explosion and that they have been used by different types of organizations for different purposes. What specifically do you know that refutes this??? By the way much of it came from sports, coaching, Lee Trevino, etc. etc. visualization, affirmations, how to hit that little ball better, how to see yourself as a winner. Other parts came from super-salesmen who had learned how to listen to what they customers were trying to tell them. My daughter was complimented the other day on a "lesson" she gave teaching music to young ones. Actually she was teaching a group of college students who were surrogate young ones. She was told she was a natural teacher and made everything so clear and so accessible. Her response (to me) was that she needed to go back and re-listen to the various success things ... Ellen Kreidman, Anthony Robbins, etc. I believe many people have learned some important lessons from these various self-development / motivational things. Whether you approve of them or not, I do not think it is reasonable to make people believe that these were somehow developed to support MLMers... and that is what I saw that concerned me in this thread. So I am willing to beat this one to death for a long long time. From Tice (New Age Thinking) we learned that some people can never think out of the box. This is an important concept that has entered many peoples thinking. Where it originally originated, who knows? But it has been made common due to the motivational / success / self-development folks. - since it was my thread and my premise, I hope you won't mind if I have a thing or two to say here about what I had in mind. Motivational exercises are one thing. Many reputable organizations have them. In the hands of many MLM outfits, though, they become: 1) a tool to develop a cult-like mentality (such as you might also find at a totalitarian political rally or certain kinds of "religious" services, and I use "religious" in quotations because I'm thinking of the Elmer Gantry school of religious leadership); and 2) a tool for shifting the blame for poor peformance from crummy products and sleazy business techniques to the "lack of motivation" (read lack of faith and/or dedication) of the poor failed distributor. That's why I suggested that you read some of the material on those MLM links. The stories are chilling. If my intent wasn't clear from my first posting, I hope that this has clarified it.
