Nursing Continuing Education SeminarQ. I live in Pennsylvania, and I am looking for places to obtain more nursing knowledge at a low or no cost. My friend and I are both nurses and are looking for some seminars, lectures, or conferences to attend but we no longer are reimbursed from our hospital. We both work part time and don't have much extra money to spend on this. We were lucky enough to find two so far, one was at a college where a famous lecturer taught one evening, and another was a cardiac conference sponsored by a drug company. Both were free of charge and very informative. Any ideas?? A. conversations with fellow nurses regarding the issue of continuing education. I've spoken to fewer institutional administrators, but I'm hearing a consistent response. You imply quite strongly that you feel you cannot afford significant continuing education. I'd offer that you cannot afford NOT to spend the money necessary. Most of the nurses, and ALL the administrators, tell me that in order to stay right where you are in your career, you'll have no choice but to continue your edu- cation. Our responsibilities, whether we work in a hospital, nursing home or other institution - or whether we work independently, are continually growing. If you're in business on your own, say as a consultant or a private duty nurse, there's growing competition out there for whatever services you offer, and you have to keep upgrading your marketability - or you'll find yourself amongst the unemployed. It's gotten so demanding that I've met a number of nurses who were outright fired simply because they did not give the impression they were interested in "advancing their careers" - translation: they didn't provide evidence of continuing education. Yes, we would prefer our employer to pay for it, and yes, fewer and fewer are willing to do so. It used to appear pretty harsh when I was a young nurse trying to maintain a viable career, pay the mortgage, raise my four kids and all that, but although it still appears harsh, it also appears to be what we must contend with for the forseeable future. I would beware thinking that unions are the answer. We have in effect a potentially powerful voice already, in the American Nurse's Association. I don't see that they've been even modestly successful in addressing the concerns of the nurses "on the front lines". My experience with unions has been anything but positive, and that covers several different situations over the past 33 years. So: get out and get those CE credits, even if you have to pay for them. And to save yourself money, check with your employer BEFORE you sign up for a seminar - many of them aren't worth anything.
