Nursing Continuing EducationQ. 1.All can be obtained via home study courses. And while we're on the subject continuing education, ...what do you think about the fact that nurses can renew licenses indefinitely without evidence of continuing education? 2.Not that reading one of the speedy, 24contact hours lessons means a nurse has learned anything, but don't you think there should be requirements? 3.Do you think the competency validations done by employers are enough? 4.And what about those of us who practice independently? Should we need to show proof of continuing education and competency? Does this smack of tenure for teachers, which is another whole can of worms? A. 1.Under Florida rules, licensed nurses are subject to audit of CE hours. I have never been asked for proof of mine. 2.There are requirements. One, the state may ask for proof of CE hours. There is a certain assumption that nurses will not participate in activity they are not proficient in. It is assumed their education prepared them to either participate in care for which they have been trained, or seek assistance. 3. To some extent, state inspections and commission reviews do this. They are comprehensive and detailed. Airline pilots go back every certain number of hours for review and practice. Don't think this would be appropriate in nursing, as it would not cover the body of knowledge in the same way. Every supervisor is responsible for the performance of their employees, in reviewing and correcting deficiencies. Peers, to some extent, are responsible ethically for reporting deficiencies. 4. The states with CE requirements at least have an impact on keeping up on minimally necessary information, such as Universal Precautions. CE requirements don't necessarilly keep all practitioners at a desired level of competence, but at least it is a push in the right direction Other Questions : GED infoDoes anyone know of some good online info on GED programs in the US?
