Pharmacist Continuing Education

Q. I am very interested in helping people deal with chronic pain. My mother has suffered from chronic back pain for years. I am a pharmacist and have a great deal of empathy for people in chronic pain. This is the first time I have posted a message on a newsgroup, so please excuse me if I don't know the proper procedures. My focus is on innovative ways of helping people deal with chronic pain. I am particularly interested in topical analgesics that you have tried, and liked or disliked. Please tell me what you look for in a topical analgesic. Be very specific as to the ingredients, smell, and type of formulation(i.e. gel, cream, ointment), that you like and dislike. Although I am a pharmacist, I do not like for people to be on many of the traditional meds that in many cases do more harm than good. I was at a continuing education seminar recently and learned that twice the amount of money is spent on treating the SIDE EFFECTS of NSAIDS(drugs like motrin & aspirin) as was spent on the NSAIDS to begin with. This is the basis of why I am always looking for alternatives to traditional medicines. Please tell me of your experiences on such things as Cosamine DS and shark cartilage. Your input is greatly appreciated.

A. I welcome your efforts. Being a chronic migraine sufferer, I have found that the touch of understanding, loving and caring hands to be the most important ingredient to any topical analgesic. To have my wife see the pain and then without asking and to voluntarily and understandingly start to rub, massage, etc., is THE BEST medicine I have found. Not only for headaches either, just the caring human touch of kindness on any pain is miraculous. I don't mean to say that your efforts are futile either. My Grandfather swore by copper bracelets for arthritis. My mother used 'DMSO'
